A two-week interdisciplinary program uniting mathematicians, AI researchers, and climate scientists to better understand weather extremes under climate change.
The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, linked to climate change, poses significant challenges to ecosystems, livelihoods, and infrastructure. This workshop takes its inspiration from 2021 Physics Nobel laureate Klaus Hasselmann, whose pioneering stochastic climate theory disentangles the interplay between slow climate variability and the fast, randomly developing noise of weather. Viewed as a dynamical system — its variables, forcing terms, and feedback mechanisms interacting nonlinearly across scales — the Earth's climate opens the door to a wide mathematical toolkit: dynamical systems theory, extreme value theory, quantum field theory, stochastic differential equations, and artificial intelligence.
Recent AI weather models such as GraphCast, Pangu-Weather, FourCastNet, and AIFS now produce competitive forecasts, yet the mathematics underpinning them — convergence, well-posedness, interpretability — remains an open area of research. Over two weeks, this workshop brings together mathematicians, AI researchers, climate scientists, and policymakers from academia, industry, and government to showcase cutting-edge research, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and translate these advances into a better understanding of weather extremes under climate change.
The two-week program is organized around seven themes spanning foundational mathematics and physics through to artificial intelligence, applied to weather extremes and their climate modulation.
